Assistant Legal Officer – Trademark, Intellectual Property – Trading

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and prosecute patent applications (including provisional, PCT, and national phase filings) for inventions across technology domains.
  • Manage the full trademark lifecycle: conduct clearance searches, prepare and file trademark applications (Hong Kong, China, EU, USPTO, and international Madrid system), handle renewals, oppositions, and portfolio maintenance.
  • Draft, negotiate, and finalise trading/commercial contracts related to IP, Including licensing agreements, technology transfer agreements, IP assignment contracts, non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), joint-development agreements, and IP clauses in supply/sales contracts.
  • Monitor and enforce IP rights, including infringement tracking and coordination with external counsel.
  • Advise internal stakeholders (R&D, Marketing, Sales, Procurement) on IP strategy, risk mitigation, and contract compliance.
  • Maintain accurate IP database and generate periodic reports on patent/trademark status and contract obligations.

Requirement:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law or Science/Engineering;
  • Postgraduate qualification in Intellectual Property Law (e.g., LLM in IP, Postgraduate Certificate in IP) is highly preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on experience in an in-house IP department, law firm, or IP agency.
  • Proven track record in drafting patent specifications and responses to office actions.
  • Solid experience managing multi-jurisdictional trademark portfolios.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft and negotiate complex IP licensing and trading contracts.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin); ability to draft legal documents in both languages.
  • Strong technical understanding (engineering/science background is an advantage for patent drafting).
  • Proficient in IP management tools and Microsoft Office / Teams.
  • Excellent negotiation, analytical, and project-management skills.
  • High attention to detail and ability to work independently under tight deadlines.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience handling cross-border IP matters (especially Greater China and Southeast Asia).
  • Knowledge of data privacy (PDPO) and export-control implications in IP contracts.
